The Simple Book of Herbs

How to grow, harvest, and prepare simple herb medicines by Lisa Bedner, R.N., Medical Herbalist, 1995, Pipsissewa Press.

Ms. Bedner wrote this soft-bound book for the beginning herbalist. It contains easy to follow, basic information on more than fifty medicinal herbs. She wrote simple instructions for preparing infusions, decoctions, tinctures, and salves. The glossary explains many commonly used herbal medicine terms. She included growing information for all the herbs mentioned in this book, both outdoor and container growing. She also provided instructions for growing organically, as well as information on growing plants to use as pesticides, seed germination, seed sources and more.

From the introduction:
"This book about herbs was written for those people who want to learn about herbal medicine but don’t know where to start. I meet these eager students at herb festivals, herb walks, workshops, and classrooms and they all seem to have one thing in common. They are looking for a book of herbal medicine that is simple to read and understand. If your knowledge of herbs consists mainly of how much oregano to put in the pasta, this HERBAL is for you. There are many excellent HERBALS already published. Some are new and some hundreds of years old. Many of these are listed in the bibliography at the back of this book. Unfortunately, few, if any, were designed to teach students who have no previous knowledge of herbs. Some are difficult to understand without a background in physiology organic chemistry, or botany. Very few herbals include any growing information. This HERBAL is written in simple language, with easy to follow instructions about growing and preparing your own simple herb medicines."
